Chaired Assistant Clinical Professor Harvard Medical School

Curriculum Vitae

John Livingstone, M.D. is senior faculty at Mclean Hospital/Harvard Medical School Department of Psychiatry, a graduate of Brown University and Harvard Medical School, and a Fellow of The Royal Society of Health (UK). He has combined scientific research, clinical work, clinic administration, and training of professionals for over 35 years. His combined experience in medical and psychological specialties, research design, consulting to industry and public health projects, and his continuing direct clinical experience with adults, families and children afford him a multifaceted set of skills. As director of a large professional multidisciplinary training program, he trained in curriculum design, learning process, and skill acquisition.

As a medical student, and one reason for an honorary fellowship in The Royal Society of Health (June 1, 1971), he and a team working in infectious diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital were among the first to discover that a major source of antibiotic resistant infections in hospitalized patients is from the hospital environment itself. This finding has become ever more relevant in today's health care.

After an interest in the impact of physical illness on children's cognitive and emotional development resulted in his becoming a child and adolescent psychiatrist, he became Director of child outpatient services at McLean Hospital-Harvard Medical School. He designed a new model of care at both BI-Deaconess Medical Center and McLean (called Team Clinic) which accelerated service and reduced care fragmentation by integrating pediatrics, neurology, child/parent psychiatry, clinical social work and special education. This model of care was welcomed by both parents and professionals and offset the split in Washington of HEW into HHS and the Department of Education, thereafter placed apart from one another geographically and conceptually. This false administrative separation prevented services for children from being easily integrated on State and local levels. His integrative approach was translated to clinics for the elderly.

When controversy first broke out in Congress about the impact of television and movie content upon the health of young audiences, Dr. Livingstone lead the development of the only set of health-based standards to assess and rate media products. Around the same time, he founded the prize winning quarterly Dialogue used nationwide by writers and directors to improve their media productions before they would be rated. This dual approach of improving media content at its sources and also of health-based assessment of content for parental information has been used by the creative community and by broadcast standards and legal departments in the major TV networks.

Through the years Dr Livingstone has been active in various international public health efforts including serving on a UNICEF committee, as editorial consultant to a France-based child/parent public health NGO for developing countries, and as designer of a public health program for the traumatized victims of the Asian Tsunami and Katrina.

The science of communication has been a central theme in John Livingstone's professional career. As a clinical director, psychotherapist, and a consultant to a variety of "audiences", he has amassed considerable experience regarding audience engagement and behavior change. He has combined direct experience with updated training relevant to relationship, motivation, decision-making, and behavior change, including, Motivational Interviewing, Shared Decision-Making, EMDR, and Internal Family Systems, and Voice Dialog. He has specialized for 20 years in the development of health-enhancing media products- including a prime time award-winning special at Turner TV about violence in which he appeared with Felicia Reshard. As part of Gaffney-Livingstone he has been consulting and doing research for several years regarding nurse health coaching services, integrated medicine, and the costly impact of chronic conditions. Dr. Livingstone provides workshops for medical schools, health plans, physicians, therapists, nurse coaches, and business executives who wish to enhance the self-awareness required to communicate effectively.
